There are many myths about dieting, we take a look at 10 of the most common ones

1. Going nuts
If you’re calorie counting then you might have been advised to avoid nuts, as they are particularly high in fats and calories. However, did you know that nuts are crammed with protein, fibre, vitamins and minerals, they also contain healthy omega-3 fatty acids. Steer clear of salted nuts, and restrict yourself to 8-10 almonds, Brazil nuts or cashews for a healthy and fulfilling snack.

2. Eggs and cholesterol levels
Eggs have been given a hard time, but recent guidance suggests that consuming one per day won’t raise your cholesterol levels or increase your likelihood of heart disease. Eggs are rich with protein, vitamins A, D, B12 and Niacin, so they are an essential part of a healthy diet, poached are far better for you than scrambled or fried.

Qnexa due for sale in UK in two years

New Diet Pill Qnexa comes through succesful trial in United States

Medical experts have combined the established weight loss drug phentermine with topiramate, a drug for epilepsy which has also been shown to cause weight loss. The recent medical tests involving Qnexa showed an average weight loss of 14.7 pounds across nearly 3000 participants, one women who weighed over 16 stone lost four and a half stone during the trials.

Dr Louis Aronne of New York Presbyterian Hospital, who carried one of the trials, described the results as ’spectacular’.He added: ‘We are in desperate need of more options and effective drugs to treat obesity and the results of this trial were extremely encouraging. The results we were getting were as least as good as someone who was losing weight after gastric band surgery.’

Diet Pills – Given to under 18’s

An interesting story covered by SKY News today reported a rise in the number of teenagers being prescribed anti-obesity drugs.

A report suggested that 1300 teenagers a year were being prescribed drugs by doctors, although the study did not state which type of pills were being prescribed they could have been Xenical. This drug is a stronger version of the Alli weight loss capsule which is available to buy without prescription.

Has Alli been misold?

Recent reports from the consumer watchdog Which? have indicated that Alli may have been sold to people who do not require the drug.

The investigation carried out into Alli found that “ half of independent pharmacies approved the sale to researchers who did not need it”. Alli has taken the diet industry by storm as it is a watered down version of Orlistat – The prescription only diet drug manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline. However, the manufacturers claim that Alli should only be sold to overweight people with a Body Mass Index of 28 or above.
